TV shows such as So You Think You Can Dance have helped make contemporary dance very popular. This modern dance based dance form draws from techniques such as Graham Technique, Limon, and Horton. Today, contemporary dance methods have had a big influence on competitive jazz, lyrical and even hip-hop dancing. All of which have form beautiful, emotionally focused dance styles. This dance genre is often done in bare feet. Contemporary can be performed to many different styles of music.
Students will study the modern dance technique created by José Limon, a form of dance with a sense of freedom and play. It is a great complement to classical training and a perfect study for contemporary dance. Students will learn the importance of their use of breath and how to initiate movements of the body with the torso. Influenced by the body’s weight, concepts of fall, rebound, suspension, and succession will be studied. Structured improvisations will be lead each class to explore creative and choreographic outlets. Partnering work included.
Contemporary and Modern Dance Classes 2018 – 2019
Term dates for the 2018/2019 season are below. Payments are due before the start of each term or upon enrolment. Fees below are per 12-week term. The season is continuous throughout the school year with the last day of classes on Sunday, June 16th, 2019. The year-end dance recital is on Saturday, June 15th.
Commitment is generally for the full school year. However, students 6 years and under may register for the first term if they choose.
Term 1 Monday, September 10th – Sunday, December 2
Term 2 Monday, December 3 – Sunday, March 24th
Term 3 Monday, March 25th – Sunday, June 16th*
*Exception Dates and holidays available upon registration.
