CDM History

Established in 1988, The Conservatory of Dance & Music was founded by Cynthia Fisher in the Richmond Hill YMCA with only 30 students. Since it was founded, CDM has been inspiring students, to achieve their fullest potential in life.  CDM has been a proud member of the Willowdale community since its inception and has been in the same location for the past 15 years.  With a recent complete renovation, our home is a warm, welcoming and bright space ready to welcome all students and parents.

Cheryl Upper, the current director of CDM was Cynthia’s first senior student. She went on to train in New York City at The Ailey School and had a professional dancing career in Western Europe and Canada.

Students have won numerous awards, accolades, and scholarships. Students have also been accepted at the The National Ballet School, The Ailey School, The Joffrey Ballet School, North Carolina School of the Arts, Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal pre-professional program, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, the Quinte Ballet School, The Banff Centre for the Arts and Interlochen Arts Academy. Our students have also competed at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dance Phyllis Bedelis Bursary and the Adeline Genee Award competitions which are held all over the world.
